Application passwords

An application password is a credential that lets an external tool or another workflow authenticate against Knime as you. Application passwords are tied to a user and carry all the permissions of that user.

Application passwords and secrets both hold credentials, but they work in opposite directions. An application password lets another tool reach Knime. A secret lets Knime reach another system.

When you need an application password

Use an application password when a tool needs to call Knime on your behalf:

Create an application password

  1. Click the three dots menu next to your username and open the Application passwords settings.
  2. Create a new application password and give it a name.
  3. Copy the ID and the password and store them in a safe place. You won't be able to copy them again after closing the page.

Each user can create up to 10 application passwords.

Important

The application password bears the same permissions as your user account. Hence, to avoid any security risks, make sure to keep it confidential and do not share it with others.

Use an application password

An application password consists of an ID and a password. In the tool that calls Knime, use them as the username and password for basic authentication.

See the Service deployments guide to learn how to use the application password when calling a service deployment from an external tool.

Delete an application password

Irreversible operation

All the external tools that rely on the application password will fail. This cannot be undone.

  1. Click the three dots menu next to your username and open the Application passwords settings.
  2. Click the three dots menu next to the application password that you want to delete.
  3. Confirm the deletion.
