Execution resources
Every workflow run needs two choices: an environment, which defines the software the run uses, and a compute class, which defines its hardware. An environment is a runtime plus its settings, such as database drivers, Kerberos (sovereign environments only), and log levels. For an explanation of these concepts, see Execution, deployments and runs.
As an admin, you create environments and share them with the teams and users on your Knime instance.
Environment types
When you create an environment, choose one of two types:
- Managed: Knime provisions and runs the executors in the Knime cloud.
- Sovereign: You run the executors in your own infrastructure, for example to keep data on premises or to use specialized hardware.
Managed execution
Managed execution covers the following tasks:
Sovereign execution
A sovereign environment needs at least one executor running in your infrastructure. Create the environment before you set up the executor, since configuring the executor's agent requires a connect token generated for that environment:
- Create an environment and choose the Sovereign type. See Create an environment.
- Set up a sovereign executor and connect it using that environment's connect token. See Set up sovereign execution.
For background on how sovereign execution works, see the Sovereign execution overview.
